Behind the Needle
How did you get started tattooing?
At age 15 I got my first stick-and-poke tattoo, at 18 I got my first professional tattoo. After practicing on friends for a couple of years, at 21 I secured an apprenticeship… I’ve been tattooing professionally ever since.
I am a self-taught artist on paper, canvas and mixed media, and have published a few coloring books. I’ve also co-illustrated a project for a pop star. 🙂
I love tattooing because it’s all encompassing, and I cherish the connections tattooing fosters and the way it empowers others.
What is your collaborative process like? How do you work with the client to identify the right artwork for them?:
My process is pretty straight forward.
For custom work, I like to meet the client face-to-face, take a look at their inspo pictures and the area of the body that they want tattooed. We exhange ideas, expectations and how long the project will take to complete. Some times I will draw while we discuss their concept.
For clients that choose my pre drawn tattoo designs, that’s easy. I draw it. They pick it. I tattoo it. 🙂
How would you describe your style as an artist?
My tattooing style is varied. I am proficient in minimalist line art tattoos, cover ups, color, and black and grey. I also enjoy American Traditional, Polynesian Tribal, Illustrative and anything that flows with the body’s curves and movement.
What are you up to when not tattooing?
When I’m not tattooing, I’m likely to be outside gardening, walking, painting, drawing or playing video games. I also enjoy cooking, being with loved ones and crafting.
